The pupils began this topic exploring this part of history through a series of Design and Technology lessons. Firstly, the class designed their own shields and helmets before moving on to working within a group to construct a replica Longship model. We were all very impressed with their Viking Longships which included the key elements but all had their own unique characteristics. All of the class showed fantastic teamwork as they managed to successfully construct these models. Using their writing skills, Birch Class completed instruction texts to inform others how to make their designs.
Our class book linked to this term’s topic was ‘Viking Boy.’ It is quite a long book so we are yet to find out what happened in the end to the main character, Gunnar. Birch Class enjoyed reading about Gunnar’s life as a Viking and completed creative writing tasks linked to this book. This included writing diary extracts, reimagining chapters in the book and writing stories to show what they thought might happen next.
As part of their learning this term, the pupils found out about the Vikings’ way of life. Through art, history and English, they learnt about the Vikings’ Gods, the houses they lived in and the clothes they would have worn.
Towards the end of the term, the class have been learning about some of the brutal moments in this part of history including the Viking invasion of Britain. For this, they produced newspaper reports to explain the key events that happened.
Our next topic, which are looking forward to, is Space!
